Entertainment exists to distract and subdue the masses, and takes many forms.
They have always been delivery mechanisms for propaganda - from the town cryer riding into town, ringing a bell and telling the peasants what 'news' the King wants them to be aware of, to today's full-spectrum 24-7 cultural engineering delivery to the entire population via the cellphones in our pockets.
Was the King really just 'delivering information' to the masses impartially via his town cryer in order to 'inform' them, or was he using this outlet to influence their behaviour? Quite obviously, he could 'announce' anything he wanted, observe the public reaction, and over time develop methods to even more predictably and consistently expand that influence. Fast-forward to today.
We as a population are (by design) entrained to only recognise a fairly narrow band of outlets as constituting propaganda. We imagine Soviet Era war-time blockbuster films, leaflets being dropped out or aeroplanes over Nazi Germany, and maybe cable-news sabre-rattling television broadcasts psyching people up for the next 'war'. Of course, cultural engineering is far more pervasive than these few examples, and permeates pretty much everything the public is exposed to.
Given that 'entertainment' is in essence the holding of attention, there are a variety of means by which the public can be engaged:
Each of these has its own strengths and weaknesses in terms of attention capture and message delivery. For example a violent sporting match can viscerally capture audience attention, while a novel or film might engage the audience's mind and imagination more deeply.
The same agenda can be delivered across multiple vectors: e.g. the 'need for human depopulation to protect the environment' can be presented through:
This kind of full-spectrum messaging naturally leads to a subconscious acceptance of the idea being presented. Every 'touch point' an individual has with the world around them (except the physical world and nature itself) points towards a certain 'conclusion' and so it just feels 'right'.
