Alcohol engines
It's officially acknowledged that alcohol engines used to exist, with farmers distilling their own fuel on-site and powering their own tractors and farm equipment.
After only a few short years of 'prohibition' - whereby alcohol was made illegal for supposedly moral or religious reasons - it was suddenly legal again (in the US) and continues like that today.
They say that 'prohibition didn't work' but how convenient that this period of aggressive and violent suppression of alcohol (and destruction of alcohol distillation infrastructure across the country) resulted in the petroleum engine achieving market dominance up until today.
